I'll admit to using them once in a while for effect, but it's my inadvertent use of emoticons that makes me cringe ...
In my book reviews I post the publishing date in parentheses (i.e., July 7, 2008). Wordpress turns the 8) into a smiley wearing sunglasses. I have to remember to put a space between the 8 and the ) to avoid that silliness!
I wonder if typepad will do the same in this comment?!
