Off to celebrate Books & Books' 25th anniversary. Why such a big deal? Because owner Mitch Kaplan has built such a wonderful bookstore while also helping to start the Miami Book Fair, serve as president of the ABA, and always always always giving of his time to booksellers around the land. He is amazing.
Unbridled Books got the # 1 Book Sense Pick for Pirate's Daughter, and with lots of folks vying for it, including us, it went to Random House for a paperback next year. Anyway, a hot book! (Unbridled Books is the passion of Fred Ramey and Greg Michaelson, and in its previous incarnation as McMurray & Beck, they have discovered a LOT of wonderful writers, including one of my favorites, Susan Vreeland.)
So, Colbert and Clapton # 1 and # 2 in the land NYT nonfic, but getting on at # 15 on the NYT nonfiction list is a hysterical book from S&S: A Year of Living Biblically, by AJ Jacobs, whose previous book was the romp through the encyclopedia. Our hottie is Frank Warren's Lifetime of Secrets and of course, Jessica Seinfeld's book debuts at # 1 on the Advice, How to List.
I'm off to another bookseller trade show this weekend, but I wanted to say I'll be doing more sales reporting on this blog soon..both our hot books and those of other publishers. Enough of my music etc. musings...well, they won't go away.
10 years ago, I went through the multi-million copy mania of In the Kitchen with Rosie. Well, it's deja vu, this time with Jessica Seinfeld's Deceptively Delicious. Sales are amazing and we're reprinting like mad, and it should have a great run through the holidays and well into next year.
Other book-wise, Harcourt's Chosen by a Horse is on the list 15 weeks now in trade paperback!
From John Hiatt. I just blast this whenever I can:
I’m sitting on the toilet With my sunglasses on Wondering what you are up to This hotels got bathroom telephones But I don’t want to interrupt you You might be painting your nails With your hot curlers on Each one a different color Or listening to that beach boys sailing song Sloop john b or another
Chorus: Ethylene, my Ethylene My love for you is just obscene My deer you dress My fish you clean But you are nowhere to be seen My Ethylene
Well you could bag your limit With a bow and arrow Yeah you could skin a cougar in the dark Well I thought we were walking Down the straight and narrow How’d we ever drift so far apart
