Rocky Mountain high

Back from a wonderful week in Denver. I am hopeful about our business, what with 98 eager Denver Publishing Institute students eager to get into the world of books. They are a very sincere, smart and motivated group, and it was a pleasure teaching them, and learning from them.

I also had time to get to the spectacular DenverArt Museum, as well as my annual visit to Wax Trax!

Factory Girl

Just saw Edie's story on DVD. Omigod, how depressing to SEE her downward spiral, vs. reading about it. And Guy Pearce as Warhol is brilliant!

a Giant whine

Memo to Klesko, Vizquel and the SF Giants owner, whining about the media frenzy: Without it, NO ONE would be watching the Giants. Get over it.

blind leading the blind

I'm off to teach a week of marketing at the Denver Publishing Institute to 100 fresh college grads who are eager to get into publishing.  This is my second year doing this and I love helping these bright people figure out where they'd like to get into publishing and to learn terms, lingo and strategy. And I learn from them, too!

Beckham v. friends

I'm almost thankful Becks' ankle is still swollen. I didn't want to choose watching his first U.S. game over dinner with friends Saturday night, but I might have!

at the movies

Thumbs down on The Fountain...what a mess. But big thumbs up, as Roger would say, on Ratatouille and VERY enthusiastic thumbs up for Once, the love story musical set in Dublin. Charming, smart, and a little heartbreaking in the best possible way.

where are our standards?

Things I am thankful for, that they are standardized: light bulb bases, car tires, kitchen sink drain thingies, and more. And the one that is not the I curse every day: cell phone chargers!!!!

finally, my prayers are answered

Shelf Awareness picks up on the Bookselling This Week story on a Thirsty Mind Words & Wines, in Texas, founded by Pam Headrick, a retired archeologist and illustrator, and Anita Mapes, a retired nutritionist, in 2004. The 1,500-sq.-ft. store has become popular with locals. "Usually at around four o'clock, we have our regulars come in, and they have all kinds of philosophical, scientific, political, and religious discussions," Headrick said.

Yup, I get that way every Saturday at 5 PM.

FUNNIEST thing on TV right now

Maybe I'm the last to catch this, but PBS is running the 7 or so Posh Nosh clips from BBC2 some evenings. Omigod they are hysterical!! They are fabulous send-ups of cooking shows. I never laugh out-loud at home - just one of my foibles - but I laughed at least a dozen times last night during the paella episode. It is the perfect combination of droll and the absurd that the Brits do so well.

lucky 7's?

I got your lucky day. Ceiling fan, dvd player and lawn mower all died Saturday. Nice.
